Prothioconazole is a synthetic compound of the triazolinthione family of compounds. It is a broad spectrum systemic fungicide, with curative, preventative and eradicative action.

Its mode of action is interference with the synthesis of ergosterol in the target fungi by inhibition of CYP51, which catalyses demethylation at C14 of lanosterol or 24-methylene dihydrolanosterol, leading to morphological and functional changes in the fungal cell membrane.
After absorption it moves into cells of the target organisms, effecting sterol biosynthesis and thereby disrupting membrane structure. This ultimately effects hyphal growth and germ tube elongation.
